NEW WALGREENS UNDERWAY IN EAST ATHENS, GEORGIA (October 2009) Development of a new Walgreens is underway in East Athens. Located in the northwest quadrant of the Lexington Road (U.S. Hwy 78) and Cherokee Road intersection, the Walgreens site combines the former Golden Pantry gas and convenience store property with an adjacent outparcel. The Walgreens site is part of a larger 20 acre development project that includes the Lowe’s developed by Hull Storey Gibson Companies in 2006 and a second outparcel planned for small shops. The site is adjacent to the Athens Clarke County Ben Epps Airport and in the Airport Overlay District which required the issuance of a Special Use Permit. After several months of developing plans for approval by the Airport Authority, the Planning Commission and Board of Commissioners, Athens Clarke County issued a Special Use Permit for the project. Demolition of the Golden pantry building and removal of the underground storage tanks commenced on September 11th. The facility will contain 14,550 s.f. and is scheduled to open Fall 2010.
